Starbase, Texas โ The transformation of the Rio Grande Valley from a quiet coastal region to a central hub of the U.S. military-industrial base was solidified Monday as Secretary of War Pete Hegseth visited SpaceXโs Starbase facility. Accompanied by Elon Musk and Senator John Cornyn, Hegseth outlined a vision where commercial innovation drives national security, backed by a confirmed $740 million federal infusion for defense-related work at SpaceX.
"There is nothing like this in America. There is nothing like this in the world," Hegseth stated regarding the Starbase launch site.
While the Secretary focused on national defense, new data highlights the profound economic shift occurring locally. Once frequently cited as one of the poorest regions in the nation per capita, Cameron County is seeing a rapid industrialization.
According to recent economic analyses, SpaceXโs operations now support approximately 24,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. The physical footprint of the company continues to expand as well, with the construction of "Gigabay," a massive manufacturing facility designed to produce Starship rockets at scale.
The partnership signals a long term integration of private spaceflight and military capability. Musk closed the event by reiterating his broader goals, stating that the technology developed at Starbase is intended to "make Star Trek real," eventually allowing humanity to travel to other star systems.
For the Rio Grande Valley, the visit confirms that Starbase is no longer a temporary experiment, but a federally backed pillar of U.S. defense strategy.

The Mission City Council is considering a new ordinance that would significantly restrict where new car washes can be built in the city. If approved, the new rule would prevent any new car wash establishment from opening within a one-mile radius of an existing one, effectively putting a cap on how close these businesses can be to one another.
Several cities in the Rio Grande Valley and across the U.S. have already passed similar "anti-clustering" laws to stop car wash saturation.

HARLINGEN RESIDENTS UNITE AGAINST POSSIBLE DATA CENTER
A wave of concerned citizens dominated the public comment section of the January 7 City Commission meeting to oppose a rumored AI data center project. Citing fears of secret land deals and non-disclosure agreements, speakers warned that the proposed facility could consume millions of gallons of water daily and threaten the local power grid. Residents urged city leaders to reject what they termed "extraction sites," arguing these projects would offer few permanent jobs while putting the community's health and resources at significant risk.
Among the speakers was Dr. Etienne Rosas, a candidate for Congress in Texasโ 34th District, who argued that Harlingen is already a water stressed community where residents and farmers face rationing while a single data center could guzzle over a billion gallons annually. He cautioned that such projects often privatize profits while socializing losses, leaving taxpayers to fund the infrastructure needed to support them.
Despite the impassioned testimony, the Mayor and Commissioners were unable to respond to the speakers' concerns or questions, as the Texas Open Meetings Act prohibits officials from discussing items not listed on the official agenda.

Residents in Edinburg took the opportunity at Tuesdays Commission meeting to voice that they do not want data centers in their city. During the public comment session, speakers Joe Rodriguez and Marilyn Lara urged the council to reconsider development, citing serious concerns about increased cancer risks, grid instability, and water scarcity in the Rio Grande Valley. Drawing comparisons to the "Colossus" supercomputer in Tennessee and the environmental impact of Starbase in Brownsville, residents questioned who would bear the financial liability for potential grid failures and emphasized that the promise of tech innovation should not come at the expense of community health.
Despite "closed-loop" cooling claims, fears remain that data centers will tap into the scarce RGV water supply, alongside concerns of rolling blackouts and rate increases to support the crypto/AI load.
Notably, because this feedback was delivered during the public comment section, the City Council was legally restricted from responding to the speakers during the meeting.

Enjoy being "Puro 956" while you can... a new area code is coming. ๐ฑ
Itโs officially 2026, and this might be the last full year that the Rio Grande Valley/Laredo is exclusively "The 956."
According to the latest federal reports (NANPA), the 956 area code is projected to officially exhaust (run out of new numbers) by early 2027.
What this means for us this year: State regulators are expected to announce the new "Overlay" area code sometime in 2026 to prepare for the switch.
If you have a 956 number: You keep it.
After the numbers exhaust you will likely get the new area code (whatever they decide to call it).
If you got a "956" tattoo not sure what to tell you.
There are already threads online predicting the new code could be 449 (unconfirmed!), but we won't know for sure until the state makes the official announcement.
