U.S. Senators for Texas, Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, have introduced new legislation to address Mexico's water delivery shortfalls under the 1944 Water Treaty.
The bill, called the "Ensuring Predictable and Reliable Water Deliveries Act of 2025," notes that Mexico delivered only about 50% of its required water in the last 5-year cycle, which ended in October 2025.
The legislation would authorize the U.S. President to impose repercussions, such as denying non-treaty water requests, if Mexico fails to meet its obligations. The goal is to protect Texas farmers and ranchers affected by the shortages.
