Fort Brown Border Patrol Agents located an elderly man in Boca Chica, Texas, who had been reported missing. Upon encounter, agents noticed the man was disoriented, possibly suffering from a medical condition, and his vehicle was stuck on the beach.

Agents notified the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office who confirmed there was an active silver alert for the man. Great job by all involved, bringing a positive outcome to this missing person report, making one RGV family whole again.

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day:

Many Texans know that Harlon Block, a Texan, is the man planting the flag on the far right in the famous photo of the marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. Sadly, Block was killed in action just a week later, on March 1, 1945. When that photo was released it was an instant sensation back home. Everybody wanted to know the identities of the Marines in the photo, but Harlon Block's back was to the camera and he was misidentified as another Marine who had also lost his life on the island. For two years, the Marine holding the pole was thought to be Henry Hanson.

But in May, 1946 the man shown in this photo, Ira Hayes, appeared at the home of Ed Block, Harlon Block's father, in Weslaco, Texas. Having hitchhiked 1300 miles in three days from his home on the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, Ira Hayes ---- who had fought on Iwo Jima and survived the war ---- walked out into the cotton field where Ed Block was working. There the native Pima Indian told him that the man planting the flag in the picture was actually his son, Harlon.

After only a few minutes of conversation, Hayes turned around and hitchhiked back home to Arizona, his last service to a fellow Marine completed. After an inquiry, Harlon Block was correctly identified and took his honored place in history.

Ira Hayes died in 1955 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

On Saturday there will be five newcomers stepping foot for the first time in the Octagon, and one of them is “The Brick” Victor Martinez (13-4) who will be making his debut against lightweight Jordan Leavitt (10-2).

Martinez, who has been a professional fighter since 2011 and holds a Fury FC 155-pound title, earned a UFC contract on Dana White’s Contender Series with a unanimous decision against Jacob Rosales. He hopes that his experience in the UFC APEX, where he earned his contract, will give him a sense of comfortability come fight night.

Martinez is riding a hot streak of seven straight wins and is eager to extend it to eight and give Leavitt a second consecutive loss.

I know that most of you are not aware of this and might be shocked by this, but I know that, like me, some of you remember this. My dad and my mom were talking about this assassination that occurred on July 11, 1968, in McAllen. Apparently, it had some mob connections. I was later to find out also some connections to a famous person in Hollywood.

Records show that Jimmy Horn, a bookkeeper, was walking into Wyatt's Cafeteria in McAllen when he noticed his boss, Sam Degelia, Jr., along with his business partner, Pete Scamardo. The records indicate that Horn asked them to join him for dinner, but Degelia told him he was waiting for some men regarding a business deal. Horn was going to be the last person to see Degelia alive, who was not involved in his death.

Later that evening, Degelia was picked up by Charles Voyde Harrelson and Jerry O'Brien Watkins. By this time, Scamardo, Degelia's partner, was facing financial difficulties, and since Harrelson owed him money from some heroin that Harrelson had lost, Scamardo said he would pay Harrelson $2,000 to kill Degelia. Scamardo stood to collect $100,000 in insurance money upon Degelia's death. Harrelson was a mob hitman who later assassinated a federal judge in San Antonio.

Ranger Tol Dawson conducted the investigation, and you will see photos of some of his report when he recovered the murder weapon on 2nd Street. The longest report was the confession he got from Jerry Watkins who detailed how they drove on South Depot Road (23rd Street) in McAllen with Sam Degelia to a shack and that was where Harrelson killed him. That report is too lengthy to include here.

Texas state Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. has voted for anti-abortion legislation more than a dozen times in the last decade. The county’s official appraised value for Ms. Workman’s home was $34,473 when SpaceX made its offers. The county increased its appraisal to $141,573 for 2021, according to the county’s website. An appraiser Ms. Workman hired when SpaceX was making its offers valued it at $194,000, she said.
The Workmans received two more offers from SpaceX but neither surpassed $150,000, they said. Then another, $210,600, came with a phone call from SpaceX’s senior director of finance, David Finlay, who told them they had a week to respond or SpaceX would pursue a “different route,” said Ms. Workman.
